Anil K. Sukumaran, CPA, joined Newmark in 2019 as chief accounting officer (CAO), responsible for oversight of the company’s accounting and financial reporting. Mr. Sukumaran reports to Chief Financial Officer Michael Rispoli and is a key member of the senior management team.
Prior to Newmark, Mr. Sukumaran served as head of accounting policy at Roivant Sciences in New York. In this position, he led the company’s accounting policy group and was responsible for working with cross-functional teams in resolving technical accounting matters related to the company and its subsidiaries. He also was a key leader in ensuring accounting operations were decentralized to the subsidiaries and was instrumental in instituting a governance function to monitor the quality of accounting operations and financial statements at the parent and the subsidiaries. Additionally, Mr. Sukumaran managed SEC reporting for the company’s public subsidiaries and was instrumental in maintaining internal control over financial reporting.
Previously, Mr. Sukumaran was a lead senior manager within Ernst & Young’s Financial Accounting Advisory Services and a key member of the firm’s “on-call” group. He was a subject matter expert and advised clients and investment bankers on various complex accounting issues, such as VIEs and consolidations, business combinations, share-based payments, accounting for investments under the equity method and joint ventures. Mr. Sukumaran also led large transaction projects, such as M&As and divestitures, across several industries, including life sciences, technology, real estate and consumer products.
Earlier, Mr. Sukumaran was a senior manager at Connor Group, where he led several large pre-IPO engagements and assisted clients with IPO readiness and post IPO SEC filings. Prior to that, Mr. Sukumaran was an assurance senior manager with Baker Tilly LLP in New York, where he was a member of the firm’s quality assurance group. In this role, he assisted audit teams with their technical accounting and audit issues, including work paper reviews on engagements across the firm.
Mr. Sukumaran began his career at Ernst & Young in Bangalore, India.
Mr. Sukumaran is a certified public accountant in the state of New York and a member of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSCPA). He is also a chartered accountant in India. Additionally, Mr. Sukumaran is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). As a member of the AICPA’s Technical Issues Committee from 2010 to 2013, he actively contributed to the standard-setting process by working with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).
Mr. Sukumaran earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College, India.
