Newmark Knight Frank (NKF) is pleased to announce the addition of Matt Berres as executive managing director in its Newport Beach office. Berres specializes in the sale, purchase and recapitalization of net lease property and will be working with the Capital Markets team under the direction of Co-Head of U.S. Capital Markets Kevin Shannon.
Berres joins NKF from JLL where he was a managing director for the firm’s Net Lease Property Group, a select team of JLL Capital Markets professionals specializing in net lease retail, industrial, medical and office properties throughout the United States. Berres has amassed $2.5 billion in net lease sales volume covering commercial properties nationwide for pension fund advisors, private equity, REITS, developers, private high net worth, 1031 exchange and foreign investors.
Berres cites the collaboration and cohesiveness of NKF’s highly-talented market experts located across the country as a key driver for his decision to join the firm. “I look forward to becoming an integral part of NKF’s significant growth and increasing market share within its capital markets platform. This organization gives me access to premier resources, technology and services for clients.”
“Matt is a top talent in the net lease space and his addition once again brings best-in-class young talent to our growing capital markets platform. Matt will be coordinating with a few other national net lease experts to provide our clients with a collaborative net lease team consistent with our culture,” said Shannon.
On the net lease market opportunity, Berres noted, “Net lease remains an active and robust sector. With the 10-year treasury at an historic low and the Fed’s decision to not implement rate hikes in 2019, the outlook remains extremely positive given the accretive financing for investors. Industrial continues to be the darling given the long-term rent growth opportunity followed by medical and select retail with solid real estate fundamentals. We continue to see a significant amount of capital being deployed within mission critical office buildings in second-tier markets as well and this theme should continue throughout the year given the spread against primary gateway markets.”
“As we strategically grow our practice group, we are looking for high achievers that possess great character, a strong work ethic, and a proven track record. Matt exceeds our expectations in all areas,” said NKF Executive Managing Director, National Net Lease Practice Group Ken Hedrick. “He will be a great addition to Capital Markets and our growing Net Lease Practice Group. We are excited for him to join the team.”
NKF Executive Vice President, Regional Managing Director Greg May added, “NKF continues to grow with the best talent in the business. Our nimble entrepreneurial culture and commitment to industry leadership continues to attract quality individuals. We are building an organization that is prepared to meet the needs of clients across property sectors and in all complex aspects of the real estate transaction.”
Prior to beginning his real estate career, Berres played professional golf on various professional golf mini-tours around the country including the Gateway Tour, US Pro Golf Tour, Pepsi Tour, Dakotas Tour, Nationwide Tour.
Berres earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Finance, Investments and Banking.
