Chicago real estate technologist Noah D. Shlaes, CRE, FRICS, a senior managing director with Newmark Grubb Knight Frank (NGKF), Global Corporate Services, Chicago, has assumed the role of 2015 Chair of the Board of The Counselors of Real Estate®, an international organization of top-level commercial real estate advisors, headquartered in Chicago. The organization’s 1100 members include prominent figures in real estate, financial, legal and accounting firms as well as leaders of government and academia who provide expert, objective advice on complex real property situations and land-related matters. Membership is selective, and extended by invitation only. Shlaes began his one-year term on October 29 at the organization’s Annual Convention in Boston.
“Amazing conversations have defined The Counselors since its start,” said Shlaes. “My father and grandfather were both CREs, and I hope they’d recognize what we’re building now. We’ve got quite a year ahead of us, with great sessions planned for Denver and Charlotte. We’re opening up new channels to the conversation, in Europe, Asia and online.”
A Counselor of Real Estate since 1996, Shlaes most recently served as the organization’s first vice chair and as a member of its board of directors. Previously, he chaired the organization’s communications, bylaws and membership development committees. He also sings in the organization’s house band, Sound Counsel.
His 28 years in real estate include corporate real estate strategy and operations, portfolio planning and real estate technology, advising international banks, utilities, manufacturing companies, railroads, universities and state governments on various real estate matters.
Shlaes leads the data management team for NGKF Global Corporate Services, which builds and maintains the NGKF Vision decision platform. He has published articles on portfolio planning, real estate strategy, software selection, and the valuation of Brownfield properties. He has served as a guest lecturer and instructor at DePaul University’s Kellstadt GSB, Boston College, the School of the Art Institute, and for the Bulgarian government.
Shlaes joined NGKF from Grubb & Ellis, where he built its Portfolio Pulse and Thinking Tool platforms. Earlier in his career, he was with Arthur Andersen, and Shlaes & Company. Shlaes earned an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Michigan.
