Newmark Grubb Knight Frank (NGKF) is proud to announce that Susan Sonley, senior managing director in the company’s McLean, Va., office, has been honored by Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, for her uncompromising dedication to end breast cancer. Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, Susan G. Komen® Founder and Chair of Global Strategy, presented the Suzy’s Angel Award to Ms. Sonley at Komen’s 2013 Leadership Conference in Dallas, marking the sixth time the award has been given in the organization’s 31-year history.
Suzy’s Angel is reserved for those who exemplify the organization’s promise to end breast cancer through extraordinary service and dedication to the cause. It honors the recipient for committing time, talents and energy to help save lives and end breast cancer forever.
“Susan’s tireless efforts have touched the lives of countless individuals and families affected by breast cancer—she truly has the compassionate spirit of an angel, just like my sister Suzy did,” Amb. Brinker said. “It’s impossible not to be inspired by her drive and commitment. Because of the dedication of people like her, I have no doubt we will achieve our mission of ending breast cancer forever.”
Among her many achievements, Ms. Sonley’s Global Race for the Cure team, Champions of the Cure, is the first and only team to ever surpass the $1 million mark in raising money for breast health care programs.
“Few demonstrate passion and commitment for a cause like Susan,” said Brett Hunsaker, regional managing director for NGKF’s Washington, D.C.-area offices. “Her actions speak much louder than words and reflect the caring person she is. Her unwavering strength and enormous success have been a huge inspiration to her colleagues, clients and peers throughout the commercial real estate industry. We are so proud of everything she has accomplished for the Susan G. Komen organization and will continue to support her as she raises awareness and much-needed research dollars in the search for a cure for breast cancer.”
Ms. Sonley has supported the Komen organization for the past 19 years and has been one of the organization’s top fundraisers for over a decade. In part, she has relied on the support of a close network of real estate professionals throughout the Washington, D.C., metro and has been repeatedly recognized for her outstanding fundraising efforts. This includes being named Top Team, Top Survivor; Top Team in Friends and Family Division and Top Overall Fundraiser.
Additionally, Ms. Sonley has participated on the Global Race for the Cure’s Executive Task Force since 2009. She has served as a spokesperson for the Race on local radio and television, joined races around the country, and given speeches and organized initiatives to gain the support of business leaders, lawmakers and other influential parties.
Suzy’s Angel is one in a long list of honors bestowed on Ms. Sonley over the years. She has been invited to the White House on two occasions, as well as to numerous receptions at the homes of Vice Presidents Al Gore and Joe Biden. In 2010, she joined Mrs. Laura Bush and Amb. Brinker in the Presidential Box at the Kennedy Center during Komen’s “Honoring the Promise” event.
“I greatly appreciate the thanks and recognition I’ve received for my efforts,” Ms. Sonley said. “But the real motivation behind what I do is the knowledge that I am helping to find a cure for this disease, which affects those from every race, age and political party. No organization is working harder to strike breast cancer from the lives of women around the world, and I am so proud to be associated with this wonderful group of people.”
