Newmark is pleased to announce that the owners of renowned gastropubs The Wren, Wilfie & Nell, Sweet Afton, and Bua are bringing their culinary and beverage specialties to the heart of the Upper East Side at 1590 Second Avenue, the former long-time home of Ship of Fools. The new location will be called The Penrose.
The new tenant is occupying 2,300 square feet at ground level and an additional 1,700 square feet on the lower level. The ownership plans to open another gastropub similar in décor and offered fare as its four other city locations.
Along with Bua in the East Village and Astoria’s Sweet Afton—which was named best gastropub in the city by New York Magazine in 2010—the operators also own Wilfie & Nell in the West Village and most recently opened The Wren on the Bowery.
“We are thrilled to have completed a transaction with such a successful restaurant and bar group. No longer will residents have to pay a $20 cab ride downtown to enjoy a pint and excellent food in a high-end yet comfortable atmosphere,” says Jay Gilbert, associate director at Newmark Retail. Gilbert represented the building owner, Eberhart Brothers, in the transaction.
“They are performing a complete upgrade to the space, which local residents will thoroughly appreciate and enjoy. This concept will be a welcomed addition to the Upper East Side,” Gilbert added.
The tenants were represented by Michael Hayes of Boxers Realty.
