SCI-FIT Doubles its Footprint in Pleasanton

Spinal Cord Injury Victim and Role Model Brings Essential Treatment Options to the Bay Area

Pleasanton, CA (11/02/2010)

Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank announced that SCI-FIT (Spinal Cord Injury Functional Integrated Therapy) is open for business in its new location at 3283 Bernal Avenue, Suite 105 in Pleasanton, California.  At 6,000 square feet (sf), the new center is twice the size of the company's original Pleasanton space. Andrew Zink of Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank's Pleasanton office has represented SCI-FIT since its inception and also brokered this lease transaction.  SCI-FIT is Northern California's only facility that provides comprehensive, post-traditional, exercise based therapy for individuals who have suffered a debilitating injury.  SCI-FIT therapy maximizes the potential for each individual suffering from spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders by utilizing strategic exercises and providing the proper stimulation for an optimal functional outcome.

Dan Dumas, SCI-FIT owner and founder, understands firsthand the importance of the proper treatment for those with spinal cord injuries.  On June 3rd, 2005 Dan was hit by a wave while vacationing in Maui and broke his neck.  He suffered a C-5 incomplete spinal cord injury.  Throughout Dan's initial three-month hospitalization, he was repeatedly told he would never move anything below his point of injury, let alone walk again.  Unsatisfied with that diagnosis, Dan and his wife, Annabelle, sought alternative methods.  Because there were no therapy options in the Bay Area, they moved to Southern California to pursue an intense exercise-based recovery program.  After two years, Dan amazingly achieved his goal of walking with crutches. Committed to helping others in his situation, Dan and Annabelle decided to move back home to open a similar facility in the Bay Area.

"It was a pleasure to work with Andrew Zink and the Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank team in expanding SCI-FIT's Pleasanton facility to accommodate and treat more people coping with mobility challenges," said Dan.  "For those affected by spinal cord and neurological injuries, access to specialized treatment is paramount to recovery.  I was incredibly lucky to have had the resources to relocate for my treatment.  I hope that SCI-FIT will give others in the Bay Area the opportunity to realize their potential."

Outside of Southern California, SCI-FIT is the only treatment center in California focused on intensive specialized exercise-based therapy for spinal cord and neurologically injured patients.  In fact, there are just a handful of comparable facilities in the country. Unfortunately, demand is high for SCI-FIT services as more than 11,000 new spinal cord injury victims require treatment every year.  SCI-FIT is currently helping 45 patients.

SCI-FIT is a completely philanthropic endeavor and Dan and Annabelle Dumas draw no salary from the organization.  While Insurance does not cover treatment at SCI-FIT, Dan and Annabelle have not turned away a client for financial reasons.  They are determined to find a way for everyone to benefit from the opportunity to recover from a debilitating injury and continue to locate donors and host fundraisers to support their patients.  In 2008, for example, SCI-FIT offered Chris Rodriguez - the young boy paralyzed by a stray bullet at his piano lesson in Oakland - almost one year of free training.  Today Chris is walking with leg braces.

"I look forward to the day I have to shut down SCI-FIT due to a cure for paralysis and stroke-induced disabilities," said Dan.  "Until that day, SCI-FIT will continue to serve as a treatment center and resource to as many people as possible who require intensive exercise therapy."

Dan continues his own treatment at SCI-FIT where he works out alongside other clients four days a week in the beautifully designed, high-tech gym.  On Saturday, November 20th from 4:00 - 9:00 pm SCI-FIT will be holding a Grand Opening Fall Fundraiser to help raise money for their client scholarship fund.  All are welcome.  For more information regarding SCI-FIT please visit the corporate website at www.sci-fit.org
