Matt Elder didn’t necessarily set out to become a commercial real estate broker. The University of Wisconsin-Superior graduate grew up in New Hope and played soccer through grade school, high school and college. But when he fell into an internship at Collier’s suddenly, he found a career.

“I had the opportunity to shadow brokers at Collier’s, meet brokers from other shops and in six months find that it really seemed to be a genuine industry that I could start a career in,” he said. “They were people I wanted to be with.”

Today, Elder is an associate director with Newmark Knight Frank.

“I love the connecting with people, helping everyone reach their real estate goals,” Elder said.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a mentor or someone else?

It came from my dad: “Everything you do is a signature of yourself, so sign it with greatness.” I always heard it from him, and it stuck.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I think it’s that in transitioning from Collier’s to Newmark Knight Frank in just 18 months I was identified in a group of their national rising stars. To be added and recognized in short time is a great accomplishment.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

I am a semi-pro soccer player. It’s a big commitment, but we are very community-driven and really give a lot back.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy exercising. It’s a great way to get away from stuff and clear my head. I can go for a run, turn the phone on “do not disturb” and go.
